How to Create Your Own Sourdough Starter at Home

Today, we're going to dive into one of my greatest friend and enemy, sourdough starters. Sourdough starters are the bane of my existence and if not for the delicious bread they help create I would be an instant yeast girly for life!

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

To start your sourdough starter, you'll need:

Step 2: Mix Flour and Water

In your glass jar, combine the flour and water. Stir well until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. Your starter should have the consistency of pancake batter.

Step 3: Let It Ferment

Cover the jar with a kitchen towel or cheesecloth and secure it with a rubber band. This will allow your starter to breathe while keeping out any unwanted visitors. Let the jar sit at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.

Step 4: Feed Your Starter

After 24 hours, you'll start to see bubbles forming in your starter. This means it's time to give it its first feeding. Discard half of the starter and add in another 1/2 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of lukewarm water. Stir well and let it sit for another 24 hours.

Step 5: Repeat and Maintain

Continue to discard and feed your starter every 24 hours. You'll notice that it becomes more active and bubbly as the days go by. After about a week, your starter should be ready to use in your sourdough recipes!

Step 6: Baking with Your Starter

Once your starter is nice and bubbly, you can use it to bake delicious sourdough bread, pancakes, waffles, and more! Remember to always reserve a small amount of starter to keep it alive for your next baking adventure.
